L.360-L.412 Thaxted Parish Church, Essex 1934-1990 his Needham (with wife Dorothy) began regular attendance at Thaxted Parish Church in 1927 and remained associated with Thaxted for the rest of his life. Thaxted Parish Church had a distinctive tradition within the Anglican Church which was established by Conrad Noel who was vicar, 1910-1942 and continued by his son-in-law, Jack Putterill who succeeded him as vicar, serving 1942-1973. Writing to the Bishop of Chelmsford in 1984, Needham summarised the Thaxted tradition as consisting of three features: ‘(1) A very thoroughgoing Christian socialism, (2) A liturgiological care for distinctively English mediaeval antecedents, and (3) A marked attention to music and all that went with it.’ In the same letter he credited Conrad Noel’s example and preaching with playing a major part in the formation of his own world-outlook, set forth in several books of essays. See also L.401. Needham was involved in many aspects of the life of the church including the choice of Putterill’s successor in 1973. Documentation of Needham’s addresses and sermons at Thaxted, 1976- 1987, is presented in the sequence of sermons, lectures and addresses at L.41-L.259.
