When Kurti joined it had nine commissions, of which he was concerned with Commission 1, Scientific problems of low temperature physics and thermodynamics. In 1971 the A, was lIF divided itself concerned with three commissions, A1, Cryophysics, A2 Cryoengineering and A3 Separation of Gases. Commission A1 was not felt to be as active as it should be and it was proposed to merge Kurti opposed this and a ballot was held the it with A2. result of which supported Kurti. He subsequently wrote to members of the Fellowship of Engineering and Royal Society inviting them to participate in the scheme and met with a positive response, including Kurti.
