Following his appointment in 1946 as Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Aberdeen Jones continued to be involved in intelligence matters as a consultant to the Ministry of Defence. Then in 1952, at the invitation of Churchill, Jones returned fulltime to Defence work as Director of Scientific Intelligence within the Ministry of Defence. He held the post for little over a year and returned to the University of Aberdeen at the end of 1953. This period at the Ministry of Defence was not particularly productive for Jones who felt unhappy at the way in which Scientific Intelligence was organised.
