ABRAHAM CEPHALOSPORIN FUND B.1-B.148 INDEX OF CORRESPONDENTS E.P. Abraham Funds GENERAL INTRODUCTION PROVENANCE The papers were received in July 2000 from the Trustees, E.P. Abraham Research Fund and E.P. Abraham Cephalosporin Fund, Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, University of Oxford. OUTLINE OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE TRUSTS Edward Abraham was a member of the larger team that turned penicillin into a clinical reality at the Dunn School and went on to develop the cephalosporin class of antibiotics. covering the cephalosporin group National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), and these eventually yielded massive royalties. Abraham diverted the greater part of his personal share of the royalty income into two trusts to support further scientific research and education, especially at Oxford. Worldwide patents were taken out by the In June 1965 Abraham wrote to the Registrar, University of Oxford about the NRDC royalties he was likely to receive during the next few years arising from the use of cephalosporins in medicine. At that point he could not predict whether the total sum would be relatively small or quite substantial though the first payment, which would probably be made in October, was not expected to be very large. He Stated that it was his present intention to set up a Trust Fund so that some of the money involved might be used primarily for the benefit of the Dunn School, though also, if the sum became large enough, for other appropriate purposes in the University or Colleges at the discretion of the Trustees. His purpose in writing to the Registrar was to ask whether he could see any objection on the part of the University to his proceding with such a scheme, citing the Burdon-Sanderson Pathology Trust, which was set up in 1906, as a precedent in the University for such a Trust. With his proposal welcomed by the Vice-Chancellor, with whom the Registrar discussed the proposal, Abraham was able to place the setting up of a charitable trust in the hands of his advisers. Medicine in the University of Oxford he was appointed a Trustee in his personal capacity. The Trust The charitable trust was called the Edward Penley Abraham Research Fund. In addition to Abraham the Rector of Lincoln College, Oxford and the Professor of Pathology in the University of Oxford were ex Officio Trustees of the Fund. At the time of the establishment of the Fund the Rector of Lincoln was Walter Fraser Oakeshott and the Professor of Pathology, Henry Harris. Abraham alone had the power to appoint new Trustees (other than ex officio Trustees) during his lifetime. When Professor Henry Harris ceased to be Professor of Pathology on his appointment as Regius Professor of E.P. Abraham Funds Deed, dated 17 March 1967, enabled the Trustees to support research in the medical, biological and chemical sciences in the University of Oxford and its Colleges. The scale of the royalty payments received by Abraham made it possible for him to establish a second charitable trust called the Edward Penley Abraham Cephalosporin Fund. The original Trustees were Abraham, George Wallace Kenner, Professor of Organic Chemistry in the University of Liverpool and Leon David Sabath M.D., then at the Harvard Medical Unit, Boston City Hospital, Massachusetts, USA. The Trust Deed, dated 15 May 1970, enabled the Trustees to support research and education in the medical, biological and chemical sciences in the University of Oxford and its Colleges and by the Royal Society. In 1977 Abraham raised the possibility in a letter to the Headmaster of his old school, King Edward VI School, Southampton that in certain circumstances he and his co-Trustees might be prepared to take steps to give some support to the medical, biological and chemical sciences in the school. This was welcomed by the school and the necessary Declaration of Trust was prepared the following year. At the end of 1978 Sir James Baddiley, Professor of Chemical Microbiology, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, agreed to act as Trustee in place of Professor Kenner who had died. In 1989 the E.P. Abraham Professor of Chemical Pathology in the University of Oxford, George Gow Brownlee, became an ex officio Trustee of the Fund. DESCRIPTION OF THE MATERIAL The papers are presented in two sections corresponding to the two charitable trusts though since Abraham was a Trustee of both Funds and they had the same accountants, bankers, solicitors and so on the distinction is not always clear cut. The papers cover the period 1965-1991. Section A, Edward Penley Abraham Research Fund, documents the Fund from the initial proposal to establish a charitable fund in 1965 to around 1990. There is documentation relating to the establishment and early history of the fund, 1965-1969, and correspondence and papers with Abraham's advisers such as accountants and solicitors. By far the largest group of papers relates to applications to the fund, 1970-1991, presented as far as possible in their original arrangement. Correspondence and papers relating to the Newton-Abraham Visiting Professorship established by the Trust form a separate sequence, 1978-1990. There are also papers for Trustees’ meetings, papers relating to Abraham and the Fund's role in the establishment of Green College, Oxford form a 1979-1990 and a set of accounts, 1967-1986. Section B, Edward Penley Abraham Cephalosporin Fund, documents the Fund from 1970, the year of its establishment, to around 1990. By far the largest group of papers relates to applications to the fund, 1970-1991, presented as far as possible in their original arrangement. Correspondence and E.P. Abraham Funds separate sequence. There is also correspondence and papers with Abraham’s advisers such as accountants and solicitors, a sequence of ‘financial papers/papers for Trustees’ meetings’, 1976- 1989 and a set of accounts, 1970-1986. There is also an index of correspondents. Peter Harper University of Bath June 2002 E.P.
